Cultural Bites: Traditional Hispanic Food Showcase was organized by the office of Multicultural Affairs as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. It was held on Sept. 26 in room H200 from 11a.m. to noon.
Multicultural Affairs staff handed out candies and colorful stickers to North Lake students. They also wanted this event to be a learning opportunity about traditional Hispanic food by sharing facts and recipes.
The event reminded student Blanca Montes de Oca of Mexican culture and real Mexican candies. “I think a lot of candies in Mexico is spicy or hot, but really, really good,” she said enjoying candies that were from all around Latin America.
At the event, students were enjoying table games like domino, uno and loteria. There was a table designated for coloring with Latino themed pages. “It’s pretty interesting but it lacks a lot of people, so it’s lacking social aspect,” said Joshua Cheavious, Dallas College student about Cultural Bites. The event was a little disappointing for Cheavious but he still enjoyed playing Uno with his friends.
Students learned facts about different Hispanic food while playing trivia on Kahoot!
“You can read the question on your phone and I can still keep track of the winners on my laptop,” Laura Rosen Multicultural Affairs Coordinator said. “I know that many students suffer from anxiety or vision issues so I want them to be able to see the questions in their phones,”
The players received prizes in a with flashlights and noise blocking earplugs.
Students left with new recipes, stickers and prizes.
