North Lake News-Register contributors and advisers display some of their 32 awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention. It was held at Hilton Hotel in San Marcos from April 11-13. The News-Register was awarded the Best of Show Newspaper – Division 3 and Best of Show Website – Division 2 among their honors.
Previous editor-in-chief Theressa Velazquez took home the most awards. Nine of the awards including second place for environmental portrait, photo story, and general news story. Second place in video feature reporting and general news video were shared with video technology student Merlyn Peña.
In total, the video technology students received eight awards.
Jaciel Maldonado, Andres Penecatl, Benjamen McCullar, Dillon Harmon, and Christian Salinas were among students who shared first place for either video sports reporting or video feature reporting.
Layout editor Heather Sherrill took home four awards for general column, newspaper cover design, newspaper feature design, and editorial design.
With Sherrill’s help, the News-Register won first place for newspaper overall design, sports design, and second place for editorial staff writing and newspaper sports design.
During the live competition, Erika Greear got second place for editorial cartoon and contributor Jeaneath Amores got third for TV advertisement.
