Nutritious food is available for those in need with the Texas Simplified Application Project. The anti-hunger program conducted in Texas nutritional support for low income families, adults 60 years and older, and people with disabilities living on a fixed income.
According to the Texas Health and Human Services, TSAP food benefits are distributed on a Lone Star Card. It can be used just like a debit card at any food store that accepts TSAP. People can buy fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread and cereals. Items suchs as beer, wine, cigarettes, vitamins, pet foods and supplements are not allowed.
According to the Texas Health and Human Services website, individuals must meet specific criteria to qualify.
All the members of the household who are 60 years of age or older, receive disability payments no matter their age, or are a combination of both.
The members of the household have no earned income received from working.
No member of the household receives benefits under the SNAP-Combined Application Project (SNAP-CAP).
To apply for TSAP there is an online application form or visit a local Texas Health and Human Service office to pick up a paper application, which can be returned via mail, fax or in person. Applicants are required to submit various documents regarding their identity, residency and immigration status. Financial and medical records are also required.
Those people who qualify for the SNAP will receive an electronic benefit transfer, or EBT card, also known as the Lone Star Card, which is loaded with the benefit money.
