November 22nd 2023 marks 60 years since the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Now being a popular tourist site, the Sixth Floor Museum has a goal in remembering the 35th president.
“We do our best to tell the story of, not just the assassination, but President Kennedy’s life and the impact that he had on the world even after he died,” Sixth Floor Museum Director of Education, Genevieve Kaplan said.
Right behind me is the Sixth Floor Museum, formerly known as the Texas School Book Depository building, where former President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
“So I was on the air at Channel 4, I walked across the street and the place was crying, pandemonium, screaming. I said, ‘What happened?’ ‘The President’s been shot,’ and that was the first I learned of it,” former KRLD-TV News Reporter, Bill Mercer said.
Thirteen hours later, Bill was reporting on Oswald, who was unaware he had been charged for the murder of the president.
“No, I have not been charged with that. In fact, nobody has said that to me yet,” accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald said.
“And I said yes. You have you been charged with the murder of the president,” Mercer said. “And it was like I let a balloon out of air. He just went ‘huh?’ And I said you have been charged with the murder of the president.”
Two days, after the murder of the President, Jack Ruby shot Oswald.
“He was standing between Bob Huffaker and George Phoenix, our photographer. Stepped right between them and shot him,” Mercer said.
Days after the assassination, Bill interviewed a man who disliked Kennedy
“He looked up and he said, ‘I hated John Kennedy. But I didn’t want him dead. I’ve come down to apologize. I’m sorry, was killed. I didn’t want that.’”
