Dallas College journalism students attended the annual Texas Community College Journalism Association (TCCJA) convention on Oct. 4.

The annual event took place at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.

The North Lake News-Register took home five awards, including a 2nd place award for Theressa Velazquez/Ti- Ying Li for Overall Excellence – Newspaper, Jelilah Hooper won a 2nd place for Sports Feature, Erika Greear took 2nd Place for Best Comic Strip/ Panel and Theressa Velazquez took 3rd place in the category of News Writing.

Ishmita Shrestha won 2nd place for Best News Photo in the live contest.

North Lake Video Technology also won five awards.

The 1st place award for Video Sports went to Benjamen McCullar, Dillion Harmon and Christian Salinas. Merlyn Pena and Theressa Velazquez won 1st place for Video News. Benjamen Lopez and Pedro Ruiz took 2nd place for video sports and Honorable Mention for Video News.

Student Media participants from Brookhaven, Eastfield, North Lake and Richland campuses took home a total of 55 awards the statewide contest of community college journalism students.

The competition is based on the excellence of the work published, posted, and broadcast over the previous year.
