Sammon Johnson is a North Lake basketball player out of Euless.
Johnson started his journey in preschool when he first picked up a basketball.
Striving through the years, learning the game and achieving his goals, bigger plans awaited him.
As he journeyed through high school, the college he selected to continue his basketball career was potent to his future.
As a young athlete, Johnson emphasized the important role his family played in his life.
“I’m a big family guy,” Johnson said. “My mom, she’s been at every game, supporting me and my little brother, because he’s been my number one fan from the jump.”
Johnson was looking for a program that would nurture his talent.
“I was really looking for a family and a program that has a good culture,” Johnson explained.
“I’m a good culture guy because of high school. We’re all about culture.”
Johnson ultimately decided on Tyler Junior College.
“I really liked the facilities, and, at the time, the coaches were pretty nice,” he said.
Johnson enjoyed his time at TJC sharing memories with his teammates and playing the sport he loves.
“I really liked being with my teammates.
I had a very fun team,” he said. Five-star recruit Jermontae Hill contributed to Johnson’s games throughout the season.
“He was the oldest, so he was like my little mentor, I would say, and he just kind of showed me the ways of basketball, how to get better and build my IQ.”
When Johnson decided to make a change, determined to continue his basketball career, he returned home to attend college at North Lake.
Head coach, Josh Mills, leads a winning basketball program.
“I want to win,” Johnson said.
“They just came off a national championship last year.
I really like Coach Mills and he knows how to win. So, I want to know how to win also.”
He admires the caring and strategic coach he now has the opportunity to learn from.
Transitioning is not always an easy task, particularly when returning home.
“I learned to keep going. Everybody has their own journey and just keep going on mine, don’t compare myself,” Johnson said.
He reassures himself that everything happens for a reason, and he is presented with opportunities when the time is right.
Johnson has enjoyed his transition.
“It’s good coming from a scholarship school.
I learned a lot from older guys, so I’m able to give back to the younger guys now and teach them my ways and how to get better,” he said.
Johnson plans to continue his basketball career at a higher level.
“I want to go play division one basketball. Mid-major, low-major, high-major.
Doesn’t really matter. Just somewhere in that division,” Johnson said.
With an end goal in mind, Johnson does not want to stop there.
“I want to play professionally. It could be overseas.
Main goal is the NBA but anywhere professionally,” he said.
Taking each day step-by-step and enjoying his journey, Johnson aspires to achieve big goals.
“I just really want to win,” Johnson stressed.
With hard work, persistence and the help of his family, coaches, teammates and administrators, he is destined for greatness.
