In a world often overshadowed by the challenges of cancer, “Light the Night” stands as a beacon of hope, rallying communities to make a difference.
The event took place on the lawn of Reunion Tower on Oct. 26.
““Light The Night” is a yearly event hosted by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in several places around the DFW area that recognizes patients and families of those impacted by Leukemia and Lymphoma,” said Vanessa Robles, chair of the service committee of Phi Theta Kappa at North Lake Campus.
People are often drawn to volunteer for the event due to personal connections to cancer, the chance to build community and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
The event offered students networking and skill-building opportunities, making it a rewarding experience both personally and professionally.
The centerpiece of the fundraiser was the lighting of lanterns meant to convey a collective commitment to a brighter future.
“The purpose of the event is specifically allowing a source of connection, bonding and embracing the depth of impact of these illnesses as well as seeking research that would help find a solution to this issue,” Robles said. “I have volunteered two years in a row and hope to continue doing this in the future.”
The drive to support the community and address an urgent need is what inspired people to volunteer and get involved. It also served to reassure those affected by the diseases that they have a network of support.
“This event brought up emotions of union ship, reminding us that people do not struggle alone. As well as a moment of silence and light for the honor, peace and recognition of those directly affected by this illness.” Robles said.
As lanterns rose into the night, the atmosphere became profoundly moving, filled with hope and unity. Each lantern symbolized a unique story of survival, support and remembrance, creating a powerful visual of solidarity when lifted in unison.
The crowd exhibited a quiet strength, sharing an understanding of those who are struggling, those who were lost and a collective commitment to a brighter future.
