With heavy hearts, we honor the life of teacher, mentor and cherished friend Stephen Nutt who taught guitar at North Lake and other campuses in the Dallas College and Tarrant County College communities. He died unexpectedly at home on Sept. 26. He was 61.
Nutt’s passion for music was a gift he shared generously as he guided students along their paths of musical discovery. With every lesson, he imparted more than the technical skill of playing an instrument. He taught patience, dedication and the beauty of expressing one’s soul through music.
Nutt’s mentorship reached far beyond the strings of the guitar. He nurtured musicianship, character and compassion in all who had the opportunity to learn from him. He was a friend who listened, encouraged and inspired, never failing to believe in the potential of those he taught.
His presence brought not only music, but laughter, wisdom and a sense of belonging. He was a beacon of kindness, always willing to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement when it was needed. He made every lesson feel like an adventure.
As his students mourn his passing, Nutt is remembered with gratitude for the lessons and love through music that echoes in our hearts. His spirit will continue to inspire, and his legacy will live on in the songs we played and in the skills that he taught us – especially the “hammer on and pull off.”
Though he may no longer be with us in body, his influence remains. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, knowing that they too were blessed by the love and joy he shared.
According to his obituary, Nutt was proceeded in death by his mother, Virginia Hackworth, his father, Victor L. Nutt, Jr., stepfather, Don Hackworth and his beloved grandparents, Virginia and Lloyd Nowell.
He leaves behind his brother Vic Nutt (Carol), stepbrothers, Alan and Patrick Hackworth, aunt, Anne Brown; uncles, Jim Nowell (Ann) and Joe Nowell (Lois) along with several nephews, nieces and cousins. He was especially close to his cousin, Byron Brown.
May we all find comfort in knowing that his impact will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest well friend. Until we meet again, thank you Stephen.
