International students occupy a good portion of the Dallas College campuses. Even so, the majority of the students and staff seem to have never heard of the intricacies behind the term.
“Technically, the term international is kind of broad. International students can be anybody outside of the United States,” said Designated School Officer (DSO), John Blaylock. “For us specifically, that’s for the F-1 (visa) student.”
As a DSO, Blaylock’s job is to make sure students understand and follow immigration laws.
“The classes are like more expensive for us,” said Dallas College student Buthaina Osman.
F-1 students have to pay a higher, out-of-state tuition, unlike local students who get a cheaper, in-district rate.
“It always takes three in-district students to replace on F-1 student,” Blaylock said.
Even though they pay the highest tuition, these students are not legally allowed to work off-campus.
“It’s hard for us, not being able to work,” said Dallas College student Melissa Herrera.
There are a few on-campus jobs, but they are tough to secure.
“And there are many students that want the same think,” Herrera said.
“It’s not easy for everyone. I realized that,” Osman said.
F-1 students who don’t follow these rules may lose their status and be sent back to their country.
“And it’s scary. It’s scary. So we try to advocate as much as possible and make sure you stay in status,” Blaylock said.
But even with its difficulties …
“Don’t give up,” said Herrera.
“Don’t give up,” said student Alanis Ramos.”
“Come talk to us. Don’t be afraid of us. We’re not scary people,” Blaylock said.
