The Student Leadership Institute (SLI) at Dallas College course is a free, one-semester program offered twice a year, during the fall and spring semesters. While certain elements of the program are self-paced, students are encouraged to participate in scheduled sessions, interactive workshops and special events to fully engage with the material and maximize their leadership development.
“It features a structured curriculum that includes a combination of online learning and in-person experiences,” said Antonio Soresh, student life and engagement coordinator for Dallas College/North Lake Campus.
The SLI course was conceived through the collaborative vision of Director of Student Life, Frankie Ward, alongside her dedicated team, including Team Lead, Martell Williams, Paul Crawford, Dr. Isaac Williams, Veronica Leal, Vida Leal, Dara Eason and Soresh.
Students can participate in the SLI program without it affecting their GPA. The program is hybrid and offers students a mix of both online and in-person learning experiences. While most coursework and discussions will take place online, students can also attend in-person workshops, leadership retreats and conferences, experiences that prepare them for academic, professional and community leadership roles.
Soresch notes that there will be in-person sessions across all of the Dallas College campuses for those who want to engage in hands-on learning and networking opportunities. The program provides leadership training and professional development that can enhance their resumes and career prospects.
“It is a comprehensive leadership development program designed to equip students with essential leadership skills, career readiness and personal growth opportunities,” Soresch said.
The SLI initiative emerged as a response to the collective understanding that student success and leadership development are essential components of a thriving academic community. Participants receive a certificate and, upon graduation, can apply to become a Student Ambassador or continue training through the Entrepreneurial Leadership and Development Program. They can also join the National Student Leadership Society (NSLS).
Rooted in Dallas College’s commitment to fostering inclusive environments, SLI provides structured opportunities for all students to develop leadership skills, build confidence and engage in meaningful community service.
“The program was designed to align with Dallas College’s strategic priorities by emphasizing student empowerment, career preparation and civic engagement,” said Soresh.
SLI integrates the Student Success division’s seven Learning Domains to ensure a comprehensive leadership experience. They include, identity development, leadership development, community building and campus connectedness, finding your next, student empowerment, holistic wellness and global and engaged citizenship.
By incorporating these learning domains, the SLI program not only focuses on the leadership experience but also nurtures the personal and professional skills necessary for students to thrive in various environments.
“The SLI is not just a program—it’s a community of motivated students who want to make an impact. Whether you’re looking to build confidence, develop leadership skills, or prepare for your future career, SLI provides the tools, experiences, and support to help you succeed,” said Soresh.
