The North Lake News-Register staff and student contributors won 19 awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) convention. The event took place from April 10–12 at Embassy Suites in San Marcos.
Students and advisers traveled to the convention by school vans or carpooling.
The three-day event included live contests, workshops, a career fair and a trade show. It concluded with an awards breakfast where students from across the state were honored for their work.
The News-Register won first place in Overall Excellence – Newspaper in Division 4, one of the top awards at the event.
The team also received first place awards in Sports Page/Spread Design, as well as second place awards in the Feature Photo, Overall Newspaper Design, Op/Editorial Page Design and Editorial Cartoon categories.

The team earned honorable mentions in Feature Reporting – Video, Photo Story, Static Information Graphic, Cartoon Strip/Panel, Sports Action Photo and Illustration.
These awards show the wide variety of skills the News-Register team has developed in reporting, design and visual storytelling.
TIPA is one of the largest college media organizations in the country. Each year, it brings student journalists together to learn, compete, and connect with professionals. The awards from this year’s convention highlight the hard work and creativity of North Lake’s student journalists.
