North Lake Campus has a language center hidden under the library that offers multicultural activities that are extremely useful and a lot of fun.
There are activities that can help students learn a new language in an interactive atmosphere that can make it not even seem like work.
There is an upcoming virtual film series being offered in the next few weeks.
The films will be screened on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Microsoft Teams.
They include movies in different languages dealing with challenging subjects that the audience may experience from different cultural perspectives
“The films touch on thought-provoking topics and allow students to consider both universal and cultural values,” said Wally Good, lab specialist in the School of Creative Arts, Entertainment, and Design.
The films are each about 10 to 20 minutes long.
After each film, there will be an opportunity for students to share their thoughts about the subjects and how cultural viewpoints may differ from those of the films’ producers.
Students can join the film series by accessing the QR code on flyers posted throughout the campus.
The films will provide an opportunity for the students to recognize the universal values of different cultures and value the perspectives of others in the diverse international peer group.
“By viewing the perspective of the films’ creators, students can examine their own cultural values and consider how they would react differently in some of the scenarios depicted in the film,” Good said.
There is no registration required for the participation.
“Language students have access through the eCampus Language Center organization and other students and staff can use the QR code in the flyers,” Good said.
The films include:
• Oct. 9 -“The Water Murmurs” (Chinese)
• Oct. 23 – “Naissance d’une étoile”/Rise of a Star” (French)
• Nov. 6 – “Salam” (English/Arabic)
• Nov. 20 – “Navozande”/”The Musician” (Silent)
In addition to the film series, there will be several opportunities to practice language skills in person and online.
