North Lake Campus is working to keep students healthy all year around. They are offering a variety of programs to support students’ physical and mental health.
“Our main goal here is to just keep the students healthy and well, whether that be physically well, emotionally well, or socially well,” said Jordan Rasch, health promotion coordinator for North Lake Campus.
There are several campus events coming up this fall.
Mental Health 101: Understanding My Emotional, Psychological and Social Wellbeing event focuses on holistic health.
The event takes place Oct. 17 in room H237 and focuses on the eight dimensions of wellness. They are physical, emotional, social, intellectual, occupational, financial, environmental and spiritual.
The idea behind this event is to create a more accessible lifestyle for students to live holistically.
There will be resources for each dimension with a spreadsheet that lists the Dallas College programs that fit into each of the dimensions along with the location of events on each campus.
Red Ribbon: Live Drug Free event takes place Oct. 22. The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room N108. North Texas Behavioral Health Authority (NTBHA) will make a presentation on the use of Narcan, a life-saving medication to combat opioid overdoses.
The Women’s Wellness Mobile Clinic comes to North Lake from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 22. They will be parked in Liberty Circle in front of campus and will offer mammograms for women over 40 or those who may have problems and need to be tested. The test involves the compression of breast tissue to see if there are any tumors, lumps or masses.
Pregnancy testing and testing for sexually transmitted diseases will also be available. Treatment will include prescriptions for both partners. For those who may test positive for an STI, birth control will be provided. Financial services are available as well.
Trained health professionals will be available to help guide the conversation since discussing sexual health can make some people uncomfortable.
“We bring it up, so people are educated, because it is part of life. Things happen and you want to know what’s going on,” Rasch said.
The Diabetes Derby will take place Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the J Hall. The event will focus on risk factors that can cause the disease, including a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and genetics. The program offers resources on lifestyle changes to combat the disease for prediabetic students.
Winter Wellness take place before winter break in December. This event includes preventative measures like washing your hands, wearing a mask and staying away from people who are sick. It will make students aware of things they can do to stay well over the holiday break when family and friends come together.
The Winter Wellness event will take place Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the J Hall. It will include an opportunity to get flu vaccines and tuberculosis testing.
“I recommend that students get vaccines just to keep themselves healthy throughout their college experience. Every vaccine Dallas College gives is just for overall wellness; preventative medicine,” Rasch said. “It will keep you well, rather than to get you better.”
North Lake Campus Health Center is located in C200 where all health-related vaccines and medical service are available Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
