North Lake Campus hosted a Silent Disco where students were encouraged to dance, eat, mix and mingle with their fellow students. The event was held in partnership with Support Programs to promote services that are available for students on campus. The event took place Sept 30.
The silent disco theme was a way to show the students that their voices were being heard. Support Programs decided on the theme based on a student survey.
“We did a survey for students earlier in the year to ask them what type of events they wanted to have and what theme, and silent disco got the most support,” said Maht Barrett, Program Lead for the Hand-in-Hand Foster Care Support Program at North Lake.
“We wanted to be able to have an event that recognizes the impact of our student community and be able to make sure we are providing that programing that they are wanting to see,” he said.
There were plenty of students hanging out in the Student Life Center (H200). For some, their favorite part of the event was the opportunity to interact with other students.
“It’s been really fun so far. I like the food and the music they are playing,” said Erwin Lopez, a North Lake Campus student.
“Hanging out with friends and enjoying the music, and just talking and meeting new people,” said Brandon Pena, culinary arts student at El Centro.
The food at the disco was served buffet style and featured an especially large amount of vegetarian options, including cauliflower wings and veggie wraps.
The event was a success, with students enjoying their time dancing and eating while learning about the available resources.
When asked about his favorite part of the event, Barrett said, “I have enjoyed the student engagement. I’m seeing students dancing and I’m seeing students being able to just be themselves.”
