The North Lake Campus volleyball team hosted the North Lake Tri-Match on Sept. 27, defeating Henderson State University JV before falling to Seminole State College later in the day.
North Lake opened strong against Henderson State JV, winning 3–1 (19–25, 25–23, 25–18, 26–24). After dropping the first set, the Blazers bounced back with consistent attacking and late rallies.
Hailey Pennison (#12) led the way with 23 points and 21 kills, while Ava Mendez (#7) anchored the defense with 39 digs. The balanced team effort helped North Lake close out a tight fourth set and secure the victory.
Later in the afternoon, the Blazers faced a tougher test against Seminole State, falling 3–1 (23–25, 20–25, 25–18, 12– 25). North Lake showed fight in the third set, powered by Katie Lloyd’s (#3) 27 digs and Pennison’s 16 kills, but errors in the final set proved costly.
Despite the loss, the team’s defensive energy and consistent scoring kept the match competitive against one of their stronger opponents this season.
Head coach Cathy Carter, now in her twelfth season leading the Blazers, continues to guide the program with an eye toward returning to postseason play. Carter’s teams have reached the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III South District championship in back-to-back years, including a fifth-place national tournament finish in 2024.
The Blazers now shift focus to back-to-back conference play in October with an away game at Dallas College/Eastfield on Oct. 13. With a busy schedule ahead, the team looks to build on their resilience from the Tri- Match and aim to reach the conference and district tournaments again this year.
The event was streamed live by the North Lake Video Tech team, with announcers providing play-by-play and analysis for viewers.
