Dallas College students are feeling the pinch of the high cost of living. Over a two-month period ending in March, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for North Taxes has increased 5.5%. “The increase of prices of food items and just items in general in the Dallas county area is outrageous,” said North Lake student Marcus Miranda. “It is nail-biting to see that something that used to be affordable for the individual is now something that somebody really has to think about when they go to the store and that shouldn’t be tolerated.” According to the data from The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the CPI for DFW is slightly lower than the national average. This means for those who are living in Dallas, some basic necessities may be more affordable than in other big cities. For example, the prices of goods such as food, and energy are less than the national average.
Over the past year, the index for all items less food and energy rose 4.8 % of expenditures. This is a relatively high number.
The cost of housing in Dallas is relatively high, which is one of the challenges many students face.
As the population continues to grow and the real estate market becomes more active, rent and house prices continue to rise.
In urban centers and economically developed communities, housing costs are even higher. This may cause certain pressures on young people, new immigrants and low-income families.
In terms of healthcare, Dallas has first-class medical facilities and medical services. Medical advancements and policies over the years have reduced medical expenses. But medical costs remain an issue.
Even with insurance, the cost of doctor visits and medical care may be unfordable for some families.
For students, seeing a doctor in Dallas is prohibitively expensive and a huge burden. For international students it is extraordinary. The only solution is to “try not to get sick.”
But for student Austin Cumbo, the cost of living in DFW is more manageable. “It is rising, but compared to another state, you know I prefer it here. I used to live in Kentucky so I can compare things from there. It is very expensive.”
Dallas’ standard of living is considered to be above average in the United States. Although the cost of living is higher in some neighborhoods, the city still attracts a large number of corporate relocations, immigrants and tourists.
For anyone who wish to settle or study here, it is important to understand the cost of living, which will help them make informed life and financial choices.
