Despite a single win in the Dallas Athletic Conference (DAC) play, the North Lake Blazers refused to let this record define them. The team made history with its first postseason victory since 2014, defeating Dallas College Cedar Valley in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III South District quarterfinals.
The much-needed win helped them advance to the NJCAA Region V semifinals for the first time since the 2020- 21 season. However, they ultimately fell to Dallas College Brookhaven, a program that has captured multiple NJCAA national titles in recent seasons.
Throughout the DAC play, the Blazers faced fellow Dallas College programs ten times, yet they managed to grab just a single victory. They found their breakthrough with a 2-1 win over Dallas College Eastfield in their final conference game on October 21.
Midfielder Katherine Garcia led the charge, scoring both goals for North Lake. She opened the scoring in the 20th minute, splitting defenders and beating the keeper to the near post off a pass from Michelle Cisneros. Her second match-winning goal came in the 64th minute from an assist by Reese Burgess, a freshman defender who earned First Team All DAC honors for her consistent leadership and resilience on the back line. This strong performance set the tone for their historic postseason victory days later.
In the South District quarterfinal against Cedar Valley, the Blazers delivered one of their most defensively composed performances of the year, recording their lone clean sheet of the tournament in a 1–0 overtime win. Freshman Goalkeeper Elise Buendia, who was named Second Team All DAC, stood out by making three crucial saves to secure her first collegiate shutout.
Midfielder Lexie Zapata broke the deadlock in overtime, lofting a long shot into the back of the net in the 94th minute, marking her first goal of the season and a defining moment for the Blazers. North Lake outshot Cedar Valley 10–8 and maintained composur under pressure throughout the match. Freshman defender Aubrey Martinez was also named Second Team All DAC, contributing one goal and an assist during the season.
Although the season ended in the semifinal against Brookhaven, the playoff run highlighted both the growth and potential of a young North Lake squad. “We didn’t have a good season in terms of results,” said Head Coach Adrian Gonzalez, reflecting on the year. “The team was good enough to win more conference games, but we couldn’t finish matches when we had the lead. Too many ties prevented us from finishing higher in the standings.”
The Blazers recorded five draws in their ten conference games, often leading before conceding late equalizers. For Gonzalez, those narrow results stemmed from inexperience and less game time together. With 20 freshmen on a 22-player roster, North Lake played with the youngest squad in the conference. “If we can keep the majority of the players and add new recruits, I believe we can come back stronger next year – physically, mentally, and technically,” Gonzalez said.
As the offseason begins, the team will continue training while also turning its attention toward academics to ensure eligibility for next season. Gonzalez emphasized that academic success is just as vital as performance on the field, especially for student-athletes balancing classes and competition. “We’ll keep practicing to stay sharp, but the main focus now is making sure everyone is doing well in school,” he said. “Passing classes and staying eligible is just as important as what we do on the field. Once they take care of that, we’ll be ready to build for next season.”

both goals in the Blazers’ 2-1 win, securing their only conference victory of the year.
